The most tangible symbol of this ambition sits on the island of Unst, home to the SaxaVord Spaceport. Holding a licence from the UK's Civil Aviation Authority and equipped with a completed launch pad, it is preparing for what would be a genuine landmark: an attempt at a vertical orbital launch from British soil, something the country has never managed to achieve before.

A growing constellation of companies

Behind the headlines is a steadily broadening ecosystem. Industry trackers now count well over a hundred UK space companies, spread across everything from satellite communications to data services and manufacturing. A smaller cluster of venture-backed startups has raised hundreds of millions of pounds between them, a sign that investors increasingly treat space as a serious commercial bet rather than science fiction.

Making things in orbit

Some of these firms are chasing genuinely novel ideas. Space Forge, for instance, is working on manufacturing advanced materials in orbit, where the unique conditions of microgravity could allow products that are difficult or impossible to make on Earth. Yet ambition alone does not pay the bills. In 2026, the launch company Orbex entered administration after struggling to bridge the gap between promising prototypes and real commercial revenue. Its difficulties triggered wider soul-searching about whether pure-play launch ventures, which devour cash long before they earn any, can realistically survive on their own.

That tension defines Britain's space moment. The opportunity is real, with launch capability, satellites and in-orbit services all coming within reach, but so are the risks that have humbled space companies everywhere else. Whether the UK builds a durable industry or a cautionary tale may depend less on the rockets themselves than on the far less glamorous question of who can actually turn orbit into a business.
