When people talk about Britain's startup scene, they usually mean the fintech apps and consumer brands that fill the headlines. But some of the country's most valuable companies are being born somewhere far less glamorous: inside university laboratories, where researchers are turning years of academic work into commercial ventures at a pace that has quietly made the UK a deep-tech force.
These are the spinouts, companies founded to commercialize university research, and they represent a very different kind of startup from the app built in a bedroom. They are grounded in patents, hard science and years of publicly funded work, and the scale of what Britain has built here is far larger than the public conversation suggests.
A boom hiding in plain sight
The raw numbers are startling. The UK is now home to more than 1,300 active deep-tech spinouts, and between 2015 and 2024 these university-born companies raised over 17 billion pounds in equity investment across nearly 3,800 separate deals. That is not a niche corner of the economy; it is a major engine of British innovation.

What is more, the momentum is accelerating rather than fading. In 2024 alone, UK spinouts secured around 2.6 billion pounds, a 38 percent jump on the previous year. That growth is especially striking because it came while global equity investment was broadly declining, meaning Britain's spinouts were swimming hard against a falling tide.
This is the part of the ecosystem that critics of the UK's scale-up problem often overlook. The country is not just good at producing clever science; it is increasingly effective at attracting serious capital to turn that science into companies, even in a year when investors elsewhere were pulling back sharply.
The strength is concentrated in a handful of famous institutions. Oxford tops the European league table for deep-tech spinout value, sitting ahead of ETH Zurich in second place and the University of Cambridge in third. Cambridge, for its part, opened a 36 million pound artificial-intelligence computing commitment in 2026, doubling down on the infrastructure that next-generation spinouts will need.
The quiet fight over ownership
Behind the funding figures sits a less visible but arguably more important story: the reform of how much of each spinout the university itself gets to keep. For years, founders complained that institutions demanded such large equity stakes that the companies struggled to raise follow-on money, effectively strangling promising ventures at birth.
That criticism triggered an independent review, and its recommendations are now visibly reshaping practice. Across 2024 and 2025, universities took an average stake of around 20 percent in life-sciences spinouts and about 14 percent in hardware spinouts, both figures sitting within the ranges the review recommended as fair and workable.
It sounds like a technicality, but it is anything but. The size of the university's cut determines whether a founder can attract venture capital, keep enough skin in the game to stay motivated, and survive the many dilutive funding rounds ahead. Getting that split right is one of the most consequential policy levers in the entire innovation economy.
The warning signs beneath the success
Not everything is pointing upward. While equity investment surged, grant funding, the early, non-dilutive money that often gets a lab discovery to the point where it can even become a company, has been sliding. Spinouts secured only around 28.9 million pounds in grants in 2024, down from 34.3 million the year before.
That decline matters because grants and equity do different jobs. Venture capital chases companies that are already investable; grants nurture the risky, unproven science before any investor will touch it. If that early funnel narrows, the pipeline of tomorrow's spinouts could quietly thin even as today's headline numbers look healthy.
The concern is that Britain ends up excellent at funding spinouts that have already proven themselves while starving the earliest, most fragile stage of the very research that feeds the system. It is the deep-tech version of the country's broader habit of being brilliant at starting things and less reliable at sustaining them.
None of this dims the underlying achievement. The June 2026 Spotlight on Spinouts report from the Royal Academy of Engineering lays out an ecosystem that has matured dramatically since 2010, with more companies, more capital and fairer ownership terms than ever before. The lab-to-startup machine is working; the task now is making sure its fuel line does not run dry.

The money is there, the ownership terms are fairer than they have ever been, and Britain's universities have proven they can compete with the best in the world.
